Dylan's Stealth Stainless Durmitor

Hot on the heels of the Ultra-Raw Kegety, here we have another build revealing the raw beauty of brushed steel, this time though fully built in Columbus XCR stainless steel. Stainless has always had a unique appeal when it comes to custom steel and when you look at Dylan’s Durmitor you can see why.

Apart from the aesthetic choice for choosing stainless as the frame material, another reason is its exceptional corrosion resistance. In most instances this would be a plus for most cyclists but when you live and work in a marine environment, having the heightened resistance that stainless provides against corrosion is a must. We picked XCR in particular for this quality along with its exceptional weldability and strength.

Having made our choice of material Dylan was keen to have a bike that would be stealthy, kitted out in blacked out parts and making its details stand out against the black canvas. For such a high end build the obvious choice was Enve controls and the latest wireless shifting in the shape of the Force AXS group, keeping cabling to a minimum.

One of the stand out features of this build is the beautiful paint finish. We wanted to take full advantage of the stainless tubing by keeping areas of the frame raw where we could expect higher chance of paint damage. Chainstays and dropouts are a prime candidate for this so we worked up a design that left the bottom half of the bike raw. We brushed the tubes rather than polished them as this would allow Dylan to touch up the finish himself if it were to get scratched.

The design went through many iterations until we settled upon a reworking of our signature Scout finish, minus the fade on the downtube, instead opting for a solid line that cuts right across the stays through the main triangle.

Probably the most eye-catching details are the ‘windows’ of brushed steel for the downtube logo and top tube Quirk signature. And what raw stainless build would be complete without some media-blasted details, in this case the model name and Columbus moniker on the seat tube.

This build was a pleasure to work on, can’t wait to see it being ridden all over the world!
